Gigi Sohn Statement on Full House Energy and Commerce Committee Vote on HR 1644, the Save the Internet Act of 2019

A few minutes ago, the full House Energy and Commerce Committee voted to send HR 1644, the Save the Internet Act to the floor of  the House of Representatives. The bill would restore the 2015 Open Internet Order, which included the strongest-ever net neutrality rules and restored the FCC’s authority to oversee broadband Internet access providers under Title II of the Communications Act of 1934. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill in the coming weeks. This statement should be attributed to Gigi Sohn:

The House is now one step closer to bringing back exceptionally popular net neutrality protections to the American people. These protections ensure that Internet users, not broadband providers, decide winners and losers on the Internet and just as important, they restore much-needed FCC oversight to the broadband industry. The American people owe a debt of gratitude to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chair Mike Doyle, the members of the full Committee and the terrific Committee and Subcommittee staff, who have moved this bill expeditiously, recognizing that the American people shouldn’t have to wait to regain the benefits of an open Internet.
